sensory overload

This post is in honor of Labor Day and not being able to wear white pants anymore, so here's a blog with a shit ton of prints and COLORED DENIM. Also, sisters! Try not to let your head explode.

A couple Saturday's ago, sisters Dana and Halley came to Brooklyn and we went out for lunch. I also took advantage of their fine fashion sense and asked them if I could feature them in an upcoming post. They were more than happy to help me out, and I was relieved and am eternally grateful!

Colored and pattered denim has been really trendy this summer. Wearing it can sometimes be difficult (see: mint jeggings with cellulite texture), but it's important to not give a fuck what anybody else thinks - because in reality - ten or twenty years from now it's probably not going to be trendy, it's going to be outdated. And if you want to look back at your outdated trends, you're going to want to know that you went all out with that shit.

As you can see, Halley and Dana are rocking these trends - extremely well, and they don't give a fuck, which may be the most important part. So thank you, to two of the most lovely sisters on the East Coast for being such lovely additions to my wee little blog!

Have you rocked colored or patterned denim?
What are your thoughts on this hot trend?

the happiest 5k on earth

The Before Picture
The After Picture
Tara and Me throwing our team color in the air!

Months ago I signed up for THE COLOR RUN. After I signed up, I followed them on Facebook and I've been able to watch people in a bunch of cities do the 5k themselves! The pictures afterwards are insane, it's basically a fun run and a massive photo shoot. If you've done the race or plan on it - I highly recommend "liking" the Facebook page.
But the day itself didn't start off as peachy as it ended up - in fact, it started with me attempting to wake Claire up. She signed up when I did, months ago, and it wasn't until recently that the idea of her not coming entered my mind. Conor made a $5 bet with me that she wouldn't wake up this past Sunday morning, and even though I hate it when he's right...he was. I should have known when she told me she was going out with her cousin Caitlin to a party the night before...and she wore heels.
So we left the house that morning at 7am without Claire. I met Tara and my family and we were ready to rock and roll!

People, including our team, were pulling over mid-race to snap pictures and have a dance party in the color. We even broke into a couple of our team's green bags to mess around and throw color at people mid-race.

The race was fun and I definitely recommend it to anybody in cities where it hasn't gone down yet this year, and to anyone who wants to do it next year.

So, I didn't really plan on busting out the yellow shoes until I was well into the double-digit posts, but I figured what the heck!? I had actually wanted to save them for a much later post, sort of as a secret weapon. #yolo? I paired them with this blue skirt (mint bird print) which is so soft and light, and perfect for summer. I wore this to work but toned it down with sensible nude ballet flats, cause anybody who walks to the subway in heels is bat-shit crazy!
I got these bow-detailed pumps for a steal when I was in high school and they've been a wardrobe-staple ever since. I've worn them to both high school and college graduation (with black and white dresses), and a bunch of birthdays in between. Some items on clearance really are gems.
What's the best thing that you've ever found on the clearance rack?

Claire's Hair

Manic Panic in Cotton Candy Pink

Claire cheated on her favorite color mint this past Monday and decided to dye the ends of her hair pink and purple. And yes, she does want you to think that it's like a unicorn or My Little Pony. Better yet,  a hybrid of both.
Having tried "hair chalking" with some of my old pastels and loving it, she decided she wanted something a bit more permanent - and bright!
*
Directions:
Claire started with clean*, dry hair.
She separated her hair into 1/2-1" pieces just as she would to curl them.
She opened both tubs of Manic Panic and stuck her fingers right in the pink (hahaha) and went for her hair around 2-3" up from the bottom, which was darker and needed a bit more dye and time.
Please note: Claire already ombre-dyed her hair so her ends are a bit bleached out, and this is ideal.
She massaged the dye in each of her curls. She wiped off her fingers with a paper towel and went right into the purple without waiting.
She massaged the purple dye under the pink all the way down to the ends of her hair.
She kept blending them until it made sort of an ombre effect.
This is an imperfect process that ends up looking so perfect.
She used her hair dryer to blast the dyed parts, as heat intensifies the color.
She did this for approx. 5 minutes and then left the dye in for another 30 minutes.
Then she took a shower, finally.

What do you think of Claire's hair? What color would you dye your hair?

*clean is such a subjective term, isn't it?

Oh boy!

After a week and a half, and two UPS "we missed you slips" later, my camera is finally here. It is intimidating with all of it's parts and clips and caps and doo-dads. But nevertheless, I'm determined to master it!

Also, I think I have a leg up in the help department. My roommate is currently in graduate school for Art Direction and my boyfriend went to film school.

He immediately started blabbering about aperture and how to make sure my tripod was level. All the professional terms were really cute.
She told me she would help teach me how to make nice soft-yellowie pictures and give me a general tutorial on how to use my camera, when she isn't so busy. So, probably around NEVER O'CLOCK. (Just kidding, Claire!)

While I'm waiting for that, I've got this article from the IFB to hold me over.

What are some of your tips for beginners?

First blog out of the gate...

And I'm already waaay ahead of myself. So, I made a gut purchase today, something I hardly-ok-always-seem-to-do, and shelled out for a DSLR Camera. My first. After reading this article from the Independent Fashion Blog website about why a point-and-shoot camera is obsolete and all the reasons I need a DSLR, needless to say, I am sold.

It hasn't even come in the mail yet and I am already itching with excitement to get it. Although, I should cool my jets because this should be sufficiently overwhelming.

I still feel like I don't know everything my MacBook is possible of. Hell,  I am realizing every day at work that even my Microsoft Excel chops aren't where they should be.

Countdown until the camera ships and gets here, let's hope it doesn't arrive in pieces.

Next purchase: a camera case.
